Carter Goodwin
Carter Goodwin joined the European Institute for Peace in 2023 as a Regional Advisor for the Stabilising Northern Somalia Programme.
Carter is a seasoned researcher, analyst, and policy practitioner with a deep understanding of conflict, security, political, and social dynamics across East Africa and the Horn of Africa. He brings extensive fieldwork experience and a robust portfolio in strategic and policy analysis, supporting stabilisation, peacebuilding, and capacity-building initiatives. His work has spanned Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, where he has supported with both national and international organisations, including the UN, IOM, US government, and multiple European governments. He has also consulted for a range of private sector organisations operating in East Africa providing consulting and advisory support to ongoing commercial activities. Carter’s research interests include civil-military relations, conflict dynamics, violent extremist organisations, and comprehensive political analysis at both micro and macro levels.
He holds a Master’s degree in African Studies from Oxford University and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been recognised as an Emerging Expert by the Forum on the Arms Trade and is affiliated with the Nairobi based-Aiducation NGO and the Nairobi Business Angels Network (NaiBAN). He speaks conversational Kiswahili.
