Emilio Manfredi

Emilio E. Manfredi joined the European Institute of Peace (EIP) as the Engagement, Dialogue and Process Design (EDP) Horn of Africa Team Leader in July 2021. He is the former Coordinator and Armed Groups and Regional Issues Expert on the United Nations Panel of Experts on South Sudan.

Previously, Emilio worked on Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Horn of Africa in particular, for the International Crisis Group (ICG), where he authored numerous reports on the region. He also worked on the Horn of Africa for the Government of Italy and for Human Rights Watch (HRW). In addition, he consulted on political, security and countering violent extremism-related issues in Africa for international institutions, think tanks, NGOs and private companies. Emilio also worked as a Lecturer at Paris School of International Affairs/Sciences Po. 

Prior to this, Emilio was a journalist for a decade, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and covering African affairs for different international media outlets.  Emilio lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and holds a Laurea Magistrale with honours in History from the University of Milan, Italy.
