Matthew Willner-Reid joined the European Institute of Peace in February 2019. He is currently a Programme Manager in charge of managing EIP’s engagements in Afghanistan, Belarus, Cameroon and elsewhere.
He brings over a decade and a half of experience in international development and governance. Prior to joining EIP, he worked in the NGO sector on topics as diverse as human rights in Sierra Leone and Washington DC; landmine clearance in the Democratic Republic of Congo; humanitarian crisis response in Darfur/Sudan; and peacebuilding in Brussels. He has also worked for the European Union in Brussels, China and, most recently, Afghanistan, where he oversaw multiple sectors of development assistance.
In addition, he has managed research projects and teams in Africa, Asia and Europe and has published widely in academic journals. He holds a doctorate in international development from the University of Oxford, a masters degree in human rights and democratisation from the European Inter-University Centre for human rights in Venice, and a bachelors degree in law.
