Traineeship – European Policy Support and Western Balkan Programmes

Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with European decision-makers, the parties to the conflict, and those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.

We provide practical experience, technical expertise, and policy advice on conflict resolution. We use a variety of tools to help us do this, including analysis, mapping and design of peace processes and agreements, facilitating policy discussions, and proposing practical engagement, for example through inclusive dialogue and mediation support.

We are looking for a trainee to join the European Policy Support and Western Balkan teams and to support the Institute’s Engagement, Dialogue and Process Design Unit (EDP).

Your place in the team

The trainee supports the European Policy Support and Western Balkan teams. You will report to the Programme Managers of both teams, and work closely within the Engagement, Dialogue and Process Design Unit.

You will

  • Conduct desk research and analysis on selected foreign policy issues relating to the Western Balkans and EU politics on conflict prevention and mediation to inform the development of engagement design
  • Contribute to the design and organization of events (online and in-person) with EU and European policy makers
  • Keep abreast of upcoming debates and discussions, reports, call for proposals, political events relevant to the Institute’s work on the Western Balkans and mediation and conflict prevention and in Brussels
  • Support the Programme Manager in the administration of the programme, including support in budget management
  • Support the Programme Officer in the development of the programmes, including drafting proposal documents and budgets

Your skills and experience

  • Ideally 6 months – 1 year of work experience in a similar role. Recent Master’s degree graduates are also welcome to apply
  • Excellent command of English. Any other EU language is a plus
  • IT literate, with excellent knowledge of Excel
  • Demonstrated keen interest in EIP’s work and areas of expertise
  • Organised and methodical, self-disciplined with excellent attention to detail and an ability to meet deadlines
  • Legally entitled to work in Belgium (EU citizen or currently in possession of a Belgian work permit)

What we are offering

  • An exciting traineeship experience in an international and diverse environment (18 nationalities represented at the Brussels Office)
  • A paid internship contract at €1,040 per month for 6 months with the possibility of an extension

Start date: as soon as possible

The selected candidate will need to reside in or relocate to Belgium when the employment contract starts.
