Covid-19 and Violent Extremism Analyst (consultancy contract)

We are looking for a Covid-19 and Violent Extremism Analyst to support the Peace Practice and Innovation Unit.
He/she will be reporting to the Responding to Violent Extremism Senior Programme Officer.

Duties and responsibilities
The production of a research paper on the impact of Covid-19 on Ethiopia’s political situation and violent extremism, identifying how the Covid-19 crisis is affecting violent extremist views and presenting new challenges in preventing and countering violent extremism in Ethiopia. The paper should focus on the effects of the pandemic on extremism, violent extremism, and its drivers; preventing and countering violent extremism in the context of a pandemic; the potential of violent extremist organisations to ‘weaponise’ the pandemic and; the potential of self-isolation and other Covid-19 restrictions on freedom of movement and assembly to fuel extremism and radicalisation.
Profile
- Excellent understanding of Ethiopia’s national and local politics;
- Excellent understanding of extremism and violent conflicts in Ethiopia;
- Track record of research publications on Ethiopian politics;
- Fluency in English, with any of the languages spoken in Ethiopia a significant benefit; and
- The capacity to work in Ethiopia.
The Institute offers
- Service contract starting as soon as possible and ending on 13 August 2021.
