EVENT SERIES: Flattening the conflict curve in the most fragile states

The European Institute of Peace (EIP) is set to hold a series of virtual meetings in June and July 2020 to discuss how European actors and multilateral bodies can use their influence to prevent the impact of Covid-19 from resulting in further conflict and to accelerate national efforts to address the drivers of conflict.

The Flattening the Conflict Curve in the most fragile states series in cooperation with partner organisations Chatham House, Carnegie Middle East Centre, and the United States Institute of Peace will include focus sessions on four countries (Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen), plus a concluding meeting to draw out broader implications and options for action.  Participants in the country-specific sessions will include select policy makers and analysts from the countries concerned, plus representatives from the most relevant European states, the EU, international financial institutions, the UN and civil society.

The economic, social and political impact of Covid-19 will be profound, and the risk of civil unrest and further violence is increasing. This is likely to have consequences for Europe and other parts of the world, whether in terms of migratory pressures, illicit trade and extremist networks, commitment to multilateralism and foreign policies as well as domestic policies.

Prior to the meetings, the European Institute of Peace carried out a series of Covid-19 Impact Analyses that began in early April this year based on in-house expertise and on-the-ground reporting in fragile states where the Institute in active.
