Creating Space for Peace in a Troubled World: Strategic Direction 2026-28

Our Strategic Direction 2026-28, titled ‘Creating Space for Peace in a Troubled World’  ‘Creating Space for Peace in a Troubled World’ outlines what we do, where, our motivation and objectives in an increasingly turbulent time in global affairs.

Long-standing alliances are being upended as geopolitical competition for access to and control of resources intensifies. The rule book governing international relations is no longer the reference point it once was, not least when it comes to conflict prevention and resolution and the management of security crises.

In this environment, the Institute aims to ensure that engagement, dialogue and crisis response address the issues that trigger and sustain armed conflict and contribute effectively to Europe’s political objectives. This could not be more necessary as the number of wars and people being killed, traumatised and in need of of life-saving assistance is surging, and threats are multiplying to peace, security and human dignity.

Europe is responding by prioritising investment in its own defence and deterrence capabilities and in societal resilience, by acting to ensure the stability of its larger neighbourhood and by diversifying its international partnerships. Our work complements these objectives. We believe that having the means to prevent and resolve conflict and to undertake effective mediation are not just policy aspirations but are urgent strategic imperatives.

This Strategic Direction is divided into four main sections: About the Institute presents our core identity and the added value we bring to European and global peacemaking. Making It Happen includes short overviews of some of the Institute’s 30 ongoing initiatives around the world. Strategy is the core of this Strategic Direction and introduces our vision, mission and strategic objectives that will guide our work in the next three years and beyond. This document ends with our Structure, which provides information about the Institute’s governance, funding, and people.

The Institute’s work is made possible because of the trusted relationships it has built around the world, thanks to support from its Board, from donors in both the public and private sectors, and to the network of advisors and partner organisations that share a commitment to a more peaceful world.
