Kai Sauer nominated as interim President of the Board of Governors

In September 2023, Mr. Kai Sauer received the nomination as interim President of the Board of Governors at the European Institute of Peace (EIP). He succeeds Ms. Annika Söder, who concluded her second term as President. Mr. Sauer will serve in this capacity until the end 2023, at which point the election for the new Chair of the Board will take place.
The appointment follows Mr. Sauer’s recent assignment as Ambassador of Finland to Germany. Previously, he served for four years as the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Security Policy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
Mr. Sauer’s diplomatic career includes serving as the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations in New York from 2014 to 2019 and also the Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN from 2010 to 2014.
Having dedicated nearly 25 years to the Finnish Foreign Ministry, Mr. Sauer has contributed to diplomatic efforts in various countries, including Croatia, Kosovo, Austria, and the United States. He has held several senior positions within the United Nations.
He is a former Governor of Finland to the Institute, serving in this position since 2019.
