An Environmental Compact for Ukraine

The Institute is proud to have supported the development of Ukraine’s Environmental Compact, a key initiative advancing point 8 of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, which focuses on addressing environmental destruction caused by the war. This Ukraine-led process, initiated by the Office of the President, reflects growing recognition of the urgent need to integrate environmental concerns into the country’s recovery. The Environmental Compact for Ukraine is a strategic framework and it is structured around three core pillars:
- Assessment of Environmental Damage: This pillar focuses on systematically evaluating the environmental harm caused by the conflict, including damage to ecosystems, pollution, and risks to public health.
- Accountability: This section outlines mechanisms for holding perpetrators accountable for environmental crimes, ensuring that violations of international environmental law are addressed.
- Green Recovery and Reconstruction: This component emphasizes the integration of environmental considerations into Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, promoting sustainable development and aligning with EU environmental standards.
The Compact includes 50 strategic recommendations aimed at supporting Ukraine’s efforts across these areas, serving as a roadmap for both national initiatives and international cooperation in environmental restoration and justice.
The Environmental Compact was officially approved and signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2024, marking a significant milestone in Ukraine’s efforts to address the long-term ecological consequences of the war.
