Eamon Gilmore
Eamon Gilmore is a European Diplomat, and a former Government and political leader in Ireland. He was appointed Senior Advisor at the EIP in June 2024.
He was the EU Special Representative for Human Rights (2019-2024), and the EU Special Envoy for the Peace Process in Colombia (2015-2024). He is a former Deputy Prime Minister (Tanaiste) of Ireland, and former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. As Foreign Minister, he had responsibility for managing the Northern Ireland Peace Process, was Chair-in-Office of the OSCE, and led Ireland’s EU Presidency in 2013. He was a member of the Irish Parliament for 27 years (1989-2016) and was Leader of the Irish Labour Party (2007-2014). Prior to his professional political life, he was an official of Ireland’s largest trade union.
He has been honoured by the Government’s of France and Colombia for his work on Human Rights and Peace, and was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Laws by his alma mater, the University of Galway. He is a Director of the University’s Foundation, a Director of Frontline Defenders, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Alpbach Forum.
