Emma Beals

Emma Beals joined the European Institute of Peace (EIP) as Senior Advisor in 2018. She is an independent consultant focused on Syria, based between the EU and the region. She is a non-resident scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC, and a former Visiting Fellow of the Atlantic Council’s DFRLab. She is the co-founder and editor of Syria in Context, a weekly English briefing and Arabic publication.

Since 2012, she has worked on Syria as a journalist for a range of publications, and as a researcher and policy advisor for think-tanks, INGOs, UN agencies, and CSOs, with a particular focus on peacebuilding, refugee return, HLP, reconstruction, security, legislation, sanctions, humanitarian aid and protection.

She is an Advisory Council member of Hostage US, the ACOS Alliance, and a trustee of the Frontline Club.
